Geotechnical Engineer
A global engineering consultancy is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to support technically complex projects across the mining, water resources, hydropower, and renewable energy sectors.
This position offers a balance of field investigation, engineering analysis, design, reporting, construction support, and client interaction. The engineer will work on projects involving dams, mine waste and tailings facilities, heap leach pads, heavy foundations, and other large-scale earthworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead field programs associated with geotechnical site investigations.
- Coordinate drilling, sampling, in-situ testing, instrumentation, and laboratory testing programs.
- Interpret field and laboratory data to determine soil and rock classifications and engineering properties.
- Perform geotechnical analyses for dams, foundations, excavations, slopes, impoundments, spillways, pipelines, anchorages, and related infrastructure.
- Support the design of tailings storage facilities, heap leach facilities, mine waste deposits, water-retaining structures, and other engineered earthworks.
- Prepare technical memoranda, design reports, drawings, specifications, and construction documentation.
- Review technical reports, calculations, drawings, specifications, and supporting project information.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including field observations and responses to technical issues.
- Help establish project scopes, budgets, schedules, and technical approaches.
- Coordinate work across civil, structural, geological, environmental, and other engineering disciplines.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on fieldwork, analysis, and reporting.
- Develop trusted working relationships with clients and serve as a technical point of contact on assigned projects.
- Contribute to proposals, client development, and pursuit activities within the mining, water resources, and hydropower markets.
- Travel to project sites as required, including assignments outside the United States.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering.
- Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering is strongly preferred.
- Approximately 4 to 10 years of relevant consulting or project experience.
- Professional Engineer license or demonstrated progress toward licensure.
- Experience planning or directing geotechnical field investigations.
- Strong understanding of soil mechanics, geotechnical characterization, slope stability, and foundation engineering.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and geotechnical analysis software such as GeoStudio or Rocscience.
- Experience with PLAXIS, FLAC, gINT, or comparable geotechnical design and data-management software is preferred.
- Familiarity with Civil 3D is beneficial.
- Spanish-language capability is an advantage.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise technical reports and communicate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Background
Candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas will be particularly relevant:
- Tailings storage facilities and mine waste management
- Water dams and hydropower infrastructure
- Heap leach facilities
- Slope stability and seepage analysis
- Heavy civil or industrial foundations
- Construction-phase engineering support
- International or remote project work
The Opportunity
This role is well suited to an engineer who wants broader technical ownership and exposure to complex geotechnical projects. The position provides a path to lead investigations, manage technical work, mentor junior staff, and build direct client relationships while continuing to develop experience in advanced geotechnical analysis and design.
The employer is an established international engineering consultancy with a strong technical reputation and a collaborative approach to project delivery.
