Director of Operations – Medical Device Startup
Help Scale an Innovative Medical Device Company! We're partnering with a fast-growing medical device startup in Baltimore that's bringing an innovative healthcare product to market and building the operational foundation for its next phase of growth.
With a differentiated product already gaining traction across hospitals, national medical distributors, and direct-to-consumer channels, the company is positioned for significant expansion. Its longer-term vision includes developing a broader medical technology platform with applications in drug delivery.
We're seeking a Director of Operations who thrives in entrepreneurial environments, enjoys solving complex challenges, and wants to play a meaningful role in scaling a business.
This is an opportunity to go beyond managing existing processes. You'll help build the systems, supply chain infrastructure, and operational capabilities needed to support a growing medical device company.
The Opportunity
Reporting to executive leadership, you'll take ownership of the company's end-to-end operations, spanning inventory management, supply chain, production planning, vendor partnerships, fulfillment, and quality and regulatory coordination.
You'll work closely with the leadership team and external manufacturing partners to ensure products are available, customers are supported, and operations scale efficiently as commercial demand grows.
This role is ideal for a hands-on operations leader who can think strategically, execute independently, and build scalable systems without the resources or bureaucracy of a large organization.
What You'll Own
Supply Chain & Inventory Management
- Own inventory planning and accuracy across manufacturing partners, third-party logistics providers, distribution channels, and e-commerce platforms.
- Develop demand forecasts, production schedules, and inventory strategies that balance product availability, working capital, and growth.
- Establish operational controls and reporting to improve inventory visibility, reduce stockouts, and manage costs.
Manufacturing & Distribution Operations
- Lead relationships with contract manufacturers, suppliers, logistics providers, and distribution partners.
- Oversee fulfillment across hospital systems, national medical distributors, Amazon, and direct-to-consumer channels.
- Drive supplier performance, operational efficiency, and cost improvements across the supply chain.
- Anticipate and resolve supply disruptions while supporting new customer launches and commercial expansion.
Quality & Regulatory Coordination
- Partner with manufacturing and quality specialists to maintain product quality, traceability, and compliance.
- Coordinate product registrations, regulatory documentation, supplier quality activities, and compliance requirements.
- Support continuous improvements to quality processes as the business grows.
Operational Leadership & Scalability
- Build and optimize processes, technology systems, reporting, and operational infrastructure.
- Establish KPIs covering inventory, fulfillment, supplier performance, cost, and service levels.
- Manage internal and outsourced operational resources.
- Collaborate across commercial, finance, product development, and executive leadership to support growth initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve margins, automate workflows, and create a more scalable operating model.
What We're Looking For:
We're seeking a resourceful, commercially minded operations leader who has successfully navigated the challenges of growing a physical-product business.
Ideal qualifications include:
- 7+ years of progressive experience in operations, supply chain, manufacturing, or distribution, including leadership responsibility.
- Experience in medical devices, regulated healthcare products, or a similar regulated product environment (Preferred).
- Demonstrated success building or scaling operations in a startup, emerging growth company, or entrepreneurial business.
- Experience managing contract manufacturers, suppliers, and third-party logistics (3PL) partners.
- Knowledge of inventory management, demand forecasting, production planning, and fulfillment operations.
- Familiarity with B2B distribution channels, ideally including hospital systems and national medical distributors.
- Experience with e-commerce and direct-to-consumer fulfillment, including Amazon, is highly valuable.
- Strong financial and analytical skills, with experience managing budgets, inventory investments, and cost optimization.
- Familiarity with quality systems, product traceability, and FDA-regulated environments.
- Proficiency with inventory management systems, ERP platforms, and operational reporting tools.
- Ability to work on-site in Baltimore at least three days per week.
Experience with drug-device combination products or drug delivery technologies is a plus, but not required.
