A day in this role
You begin by opening a new build packet: schematics, block wiring diagrams (BWDs), mechanical drawings, BOMs, and work instructions. You map connections, double-check pinouts and polarity, and plan out the wire and test harnesses you’ll fabricate. Mid-morning, you’re under the microscope performing precise through-hole and surface-mount soldering, completing approved PCB modifications and rework. After lunch, you assemble a prototype electromechanical unit, verify continuity point-to-point, torque fasteners to spec, and record any discrepancies so the team can resolve them quickly. Before you wrap up, you confirm the build meets workmanship, quality, safety, and ESD expectations.
What you will do
- Interpret electrical schematics, BWDs, and mechanical assembly drawings to plan builds and verify work.
- Execute point-to-point wiring checks, continuity verification, and inspection of connections, pinouts, and polarity.
- Fabricate, modify, and validate wire harnesses and cable assemblies.
- Perform high-quality through-hole and surface-mount PCB soldering and rework, including approved modifications, with or without a microscope.
- Assemble prototypes and production electromechanical units using drawings, BOMs, and work instructions.
- Operate hand tools, torque drivers, crimpers, and multimeters; document and report technical discrepancies.
- Follow established quality, workmanship, safety, and ESD procedures at all times.
Required qualifications
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, BWDs, and mechanical drawings.
- Hands-on soldering and crimping experience with familiarity in electronic components.
- Proficiency with core assembly and wiring tools (e.g., torque drivers, crimp tools, multimeters, hand tools).
- High attention to detail, strong manual dexterity, practical problem-solving, and collaborative teamwork.
Preferred qualifications
- Background in prototype assembly, wire harness fabrication, and PCB rework.
- Familiarity with IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620; certification is a plus but not required.
