Position Summary:
To ensure the efficient and cost-effective operation and stewardship of the Post Retail operations, security of corporate assets through donor and customer relations, processing donated goods, and quality control in order to maximize profitability. The Dock Worker is responsible for the processing of salvage goods and keeping equipment emptied for the transportation flow. May also assist in the day-to- day transportation of materials and donated merchandise including with the use of a forklift. Position function is responsible for assisting in guiding the movement of forklifts in a safe manner; loading and unloading of vehicles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates Goodwill Houston’s Core Values in all actions.


  • Ensures adherence to Guiding Principles and CARF standards.


  • Ensures alignment and consistency of all aspects of Salvage operations to include SOPs,


  • Reference Guides, job descriptions, performance evaluations, observation checklists,

    production standards, GoodwillU training, Safety Program, and others documents related to DGR systems.


  • Operates fork lift and other assigned equipment in a safe manner in accordance with organizational and safety policies and procedures.


  • Processes salvage efficiently and effectively based on company needs and adapts to changes in commodities processing as assigned.


  • Bales salvageable merchandise, identify and demonstrate understanding of items that can be baled together or items that cannot be baled but should be process separately.


  • Assist with quality control assurance.


  • As assigned maintains accurate bale count with production equivalent to 8-10 bales per 8-hour shift, averaging over 1 bale per hour.


  • As assigned, sorts totes and processes each tote with a sense of urgency.


  • Assist in efficient movement of goods in the warehouse to and from storage or production areas, and in the loading and unloading of trucks with salvage goods with the aid of material handling equipment as needed.


  • Operates assigned material handling equipment in a safe and prudent manner under general supervision, in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas, organizational and safety policies and procedures.


  • Maintains processing area in a neat and clean condition at all times.


  • Use of safe work procedures and personal protective equipment as required. (i.e. lifting, use of proper equipment, etc.). Reports incidents and injuries in a timely manner to the immediate supervisor.


  • Follows the identified compliance standards and GWH guidelines for processing different commodities.


  • Reports Forklift and other needed equipment repairs and/or maintenance to the Salvage

  • Manager in a timely manner.


  • Daily completes required paperwork (e.g. forklift pre-use safety inspection, logs,

    maintenance reports, etc.) in an accurate and timely manner, in accordance with policies and procedures.


  • Establishes and maintains a cooperative, functional work relationship with team leader and all team members.


  • Follows all GWH Guiding Principles and Core Values.


  • Attend in-service and related training as assigned by the Salvage Manager.


  • Fosters, builds, and embodies the culture of DGR and Goodwill Houston.


  • Performs other duties as assigned by team leader.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.


  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with team leader, team members, customers, and clients.


  • Ability to maintain a positive, friendly attitude and a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance.


  • Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), and adequate distance to guide the parking and operating of forklift.


  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.


  • Ability to work independently


  • Skill of operation monitoring, watching indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.


  • Ability to work under general supervision.


  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.


Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Ability to twist, bend, squat, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, push and pull.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Specific vision abilities including close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment includes exposure to outdoor temperatures and moderate noise levels.


Training and Experience:

  • Certified Forklift operator.
  • Six months of experience as a Material Handler, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Proficiency in Salvage tracking & reporting.
  • Some previous spotter experience preferred.
  • Safety certifications preferred
  • Knowledgeable in all loading techniques for all salvage load types.
