Rolling Mill Process Engineer

Reports To: Rolling Mill Area Manager
Location: Mojave, California
Position Summary
The Rolling Mill Process Engineer supports construction, commissioning, stabilization, and continuous improvement of Pacific Steel Group's state-of-the-art steel manufacturing and recycling micro-mill in Mojave, California. This hands-on role works closely with Operations, Quality, Maintenance, OEMs, suppliers, and plant support teams to optimize rolling mill processes, equipment performance, product quality, production efficiency, and employee capability.
1 - Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Rolling Mill Design, Construction & Commissioning
- Support the design, construction, and commissioning of the new rolling mill.
- Define the types and quantity of mill rolls required for production.
- Define and optimize the production cycle.
- Support definition of the Roll Shop layout and required equipment.
- Support development of straight and spooled rebar warehouse layouts.
- Collaborate with OEMs on rolling mill process and equipment design.
- Study and support sustainability initiatives associated with rolling mill operations.
- Support commissioning, startup, operational-readiness activities, and training of new employees.
Process Stabilization & Improvement
- Be responsible for process stabilization and continuous improvement across rolling mill areas.
- Monitor rolling mill operating parameters and implement process changes as necessary to improve stability, quality, and performance.
- Analyze process performance, identify root causes of operating issues, and develop practical corrective actions.
- Lead corrective actions and follow through to verify effectiveness.
- Work hands-on in the shop with operators to troubleshoot problems, improve operating practices, and sustain process improvements.

- Quenching System.
- Cooling Bed.
- Spooler Line.
Quality & Operational Performance
- Work closely with the Quality team to ensure rolling processes consistently meet product and dimensional requirements.
- Support investigation and resolution of quality deviations, process variation, and recurring production issues.
- Use production and process data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Support improvements in throughput, yield, equipment utilization, process consistency, and overall rolling mill performance.
Training & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Develop and deliver technical and process training for new employees and rolling mill personnel.
- Communicate effectively with operators, supervisors, Maintenance, Quality, suppliers, management, and plant support staff.
- Collaborate across functions to support safe and effective equipment startup, troubleshooting, process changes, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate with OEMs and suppliers on technical issues, equipment performance, and process optimization.
Key Performance Indicators
- Rolling mill process stability and achievement of production targets.
- Product quality, dimensional compliance, yield, and reduction of process-related defects.
- Throughput, downtime, delay reduction, and equipment/process performance.
- Completion and effectiveness of corrective actions and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Successful commissioning, startup, and training activities.
2 - Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Engineering, or a related field.
- 4+ years of experience working with rolling mill processes.
- Strong technical understanding of rolling mill operations and process parameters.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot process problems and lead corrective actions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with operators, supervisors, Maintenance, suppliers, management, and plant support staff.
- Highly technical, detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and drive results with minimal supervision.
- Ability and willingness to work hands-on in the shop with operators.
3 - Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with rolling mill design, construction, commissioning, startup, or process stabilization.
- Experience with continuous mills, quenching systems, cooling beds, spooler lines, roll shops, or rebar production.
- Experience collaborating with OEMs on process and equipment design.
4 - Physical & Work Environment
- Regular presence in a steel manufacturing environment, including active rolling mill and production areas.
- May be exposed to noise, dust, heat, moving equipment, heavy materials, and other industrial conditions.
- Must follow all applicable PPE and safety requirements while in designated operational areas.
- Ability to walk throughout the facility, climb stairs, access production areas, and work around industrial equipment.
- Position may require extended hours, weekends, holidays, or schedule adjustments during commissioning, startup, and production support.
5 - Compensation
Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as the candidate’s knowledge, skills, relevant work experience, education, certifications, and other job-related qualifications. In addition to base pay, this position may be eligible for an annual performance bonus.
