Job Description:

The Claims Adjuster - Liability will be responsible for analyzing complex or technically difficult healthcare, environmental, management, executive, cyber, professional liability, errors and omissions, and complex liability claims. The role involves providing resolution for claims of highly complex nature and severe injury, coordinating case management within company standards, and managing total claim costs while ensuring high levels of customer service. Attendance at trials in various California cities as scheduled is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of California Liability experience
  • Minimum 3 years of Medical Malpractice experience
  • Juris Doctorate is a plus, though not required
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Experience working with Medical Malpractice Carriers; defense attorney experience in Medical Malpractice is ideal

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and process complex medical professional liability claims, determining exposure and managing claims through action plans to resolution.
  • Conduct or assign full investigations and provide investigation reports on new events, claims, and legal actions.
  • Negotiate claim settlements up to designated authority level.
  • Calculate and assign timely reserves to claims, monitoring reserve adequacy throughout claim life.
  • Recommend settlement strategies and present structured settlement proposals.
  • Perform coverage analysis and provide opinions as part of the claim process.
  • Coordinate legal defense, including attorney assignment, investigation support, and invoice review.
  • Use cost containment techniques and strategic vendor partnerships to reduce overall claim costs.
  • Identify and investigate possible fraud, subrogation, contribution, recovery, and case management opportunities.
  • Represent the company in depositions, mediations, and trial monitoring as needed.
  • Communicate claim activity and processing with clients, maintaining professional relationships.
  • Ensure claim files are properly documented and claims coding is correct.
  • Refer cases as appropriate to supervisor and management.
  • Delegate work and mentor others as needed.

Additional Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel as required.

Qualifications:

Education & Licensing:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Professional certification applicable to the line of business preferred.

Experience:

  • Six (6) years of medical malpractice claims management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • In-depth knowledge of medical malpractice insurance principles and laws.
  • Familiarity with recoveries offsets and deductions, claim and disability duration, and cost containment principles.
  • Claims expertise in medical malpractice.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong analytical and interpretive skills.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to meet or exceed Performance Competencies.
