About the Brain Health Unit (BHU)

Brain Health Unit (BHU): The Brain Health Unit is part of the specialty hospital at Levindale, it is comprised of two units, and has a total bed capacity of 60. The BHU units are designed to provide a safe environment for older patients with neurocognitive disorders and medical co-morbidities. The nurse will partner with the multidisciplinary team to engage, support, and treat the patient. The length of stay is between 20-25 days, which allows the team the opportunity to assess, implement medication management and a plan of care that is sustainable and that will maximize quality of life.

Position Summary:

Provides safe, age-appropriate patient care, and functions as advisor, resource, and leader for other members of the patient care team.

The Charge Nurse RN III must meet all clinical ladder requirements of the RN I, RN II and RN III.

Essential Functions:

Clinical Expertise

Meets all key function of the RN by providing and demonstrating clinical expertise in the appropriate timeframe using the nursing process assuring standards of care are met.

Clinical Mentorship

Assists in providing overall direction and coordination of unit operations.

Tasks:

  • Mentors and role model all practice, and professional policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Assists staff in developing and implementing patient teaching plans.
  • In collaboration with the Education Resource Center, identifies unit-based educational opportunities.
  • Serves as a facilitator and coordinator of educational and competency validation activities
  • To report any injuries, disease, and dangerous practice to all relevant personnel
  • In collaboration with organizational leadership maintain patient throughput that aligns with best practices surrounding admission, transfer, and discharge to/from the unit.

Leadership

Assists in effective management of human and material resources.

Tasks:

  • Holds staff accountable for achieving job responsibilities, unit objectives and divisional standards.
  • Takes a leadership role in setting and implementing unit goals, encouraging staff participation in decision making.

Level of Supervision

  • Works independently
  • Monitors compliance to standards by evaluating the delivery of care through patient rounds, chart reviews, direct observation, and review of outcome indicators according to TJC regulatory standards.
  • Assists with daily huddles, focusing on unit and employee issues and providing information regarding organizational direction.
  • Is proactive in preventing employee relation problems, addressing issues promptly.
  • Provides information to patients and health care team by answering questions and requests.
  • Resolves patient needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
  • Assesses staffing needs according to acuity and the flexible staffing plan. Contacts employees to fill staffing needs. Collaborates with department manager and staffing office to reallocate personnel.
  • Participates in performance appraisals as designated by manager. Evaluates staff using reliable and objective criteria which includes chart document audits, PI monitoring, direct observation, peer evaluation, etc.
  • Responds to and directs emergencies serving as a leader and resource person during crisis situations.
  • Deviates from the prescribed chain of command when needed. Matches patient demands with unit resources while re-establishing unit functions.
  • Educates staff about allocation and use of physical and fiscal resources. Monitors performance against plan as it relates to departmental financial targets.
  • Ability to coach others towards desired outcomes, effective problem-solving skills, demonstrated facilitation skills.
  • Establishes a compassionate environment by supporting staff; enabling them to provide emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and families.
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.

Qualifications/Requirements

Formal working knowledge; equivalent to an Associate's degree (2 years

college); requires knowledge of a specialized field

Education/Knowledge:

Experience: 1-3 years

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • BLS certification
  • Maryland Registered Nurse License
  • ACLS certification for application to telemetry
