The DevOps Engineering Platform Manager is responsible for multiple Delivery & Release Engineering Platforms and the team supporting them. The role strongly focuses on creating, maintaining, and enhancing modular DevOps platforms that product delivery, platform, and support teams can consume in various ways. Platforms and capabilities driven through this role and the team include Source Code Management (SCM), Continuous Integration & Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Containerization, Package & Artifact Management, Release Management, Test Automation, Observability, and Agile Work Management. The role includes responsibility for DevOps adoption, proactive performance tuning, capacity planning, and driving continuous improvement. The DevOps Platform Manager builds and mentors a team of engineers who provide technical direction lead the adoption of modern cloud technologies and DevOps processes and keep critical DevOps platforms operating at a high level of performance and availability.

The DevOps Engineering Platform Manager will have a broad range of technical knowledge. They will manage a team that supports multiple projects and divisions and provide consultative technical leadership across the organization, from strategic decision-making to project planning to governance and oversight. The manager's inquisitiveness drives change, innovation, continuous improvement, and adoption of DevOps tools and techniques.

Essential Functions

Strategy & Planning

  • Creates vision and strategy for delivery of feature-rich DevOps platforms, shaped by input from various stakeholders, including application and infrastructure delivery teams.
  • Performs research and maintains awareness of industry trends, tools, and modern software development techniques.
  • Develop strategies for increasing ROI across strategic platforms.
  • Develop strategies and frameworks for DevOps adoption
  • Establish processes and standards forcapacity and scalability planning efforts.
  • Ensure inclusion of Security in DevOps platforms and that all systems comply with Cybersecurity policies and standards.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and innovation; identify and drive automation opportunities.
  • Implement strategies for optimal platform & tool usage.
  • Lead the team in designing, configuring, operating, and maintaining secure and scalable platform and software infrastructure.
  • Determine staffing and skills requirements.

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Utilize governance processes to prioritize and define work to be accomplished. Define, track, and publish metrics to show accomplishments and work performed.
  • Make budget recommendations for team and platform needs and prepare presentations to senior management.
  • Work closely with DevOps leadership, product & platform teams, stakeholders, and other delivery teams to ensure technology solutions meet business objectives.
  • Review project requests describing Delivery & Release Engineering needs to estimate the time and effort involved.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement security measures to safeguard information against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification, or disclosure.

Operational Management

  • Foster a culture of continuous learning & improvement
  • Develop practices and identify tools for proactive performance tuning.
  • Develop standard methodologies for capacity planning to aid work requests.
  • Mentor the team on DevSecOps, focusing on producing high-quality, reusable automation adopting industry and Sherwin DevSecOps standards.
  • Guide troubleshooting efforts to resolve issues affecting enterprise DevOps platforms.
  • Conduct and facilitate knowledge transfer sessions for technical development.
  • Conduct activities like staffing, performance, and resource management.
  • Set employee objectives, monitor and evaluate performance, and provide feedback and mentoring.
  • Create and maintain development plans for each team member, including training, skills assessment, career planning, and goal planning.
  • Manage personal growth objectives for the team.
  • Manage, develop, and mentor direct reports toward building a performant team.
Incidental Functions
  • Develop and understand critical processes, schedules, cycles, profiles, etc., for the technical systems in use.
  • Provide regular, clear, and consistent communication on the status of initiatives, issues, and deliverables.
  • Provide guidance/assistance with various efforts as required.
  • Work outside the standard office 7.5 hours workday as required.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the technology workstream regarding current state, future possibilities, forthcoming technologies, and their relevance and impact.
  • Engage in Proof-of-Value scoping in evaluating new technologies and present findings.
  • Coordinate and assist with disaster planning/mitigation/recovery.

Position Requirements

Formal Education & Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Technology field of study (e.g., Information Technology, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Systems Management, Mathematics) or equivalent experience.

Knowledge & Experience

  • 12+ years of IT experience.
  • 6+ years of experience managing direct reports.
  • 6+ years of experience supporting DevOps toolchain platforms such as SCM, CI/CD, IaC, Containerization, and/or Package Management.
  • Experience implementing and owning DevOps/Platform Engineering technologies, strategies, tools, and practices (SCM, CI/CD, IaC, Containerization, and/or Package Management)
  • Experience designing, executing, and supporting practices around SCM, CI/CD, IaC, Containerization, and/or Package Management
  • Experience working with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes
  • Experience developing documentation and presenting technical solutions to management, functional, and technical teams.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience with Azure and/or AWS cloud offerings.
  • Experience with GitHub, Jenkins, Terraform, Docker, Artifactory, Sonar, LaunchDarkly, and/or equivalent platforms.
  • Experience with Agile development and release methodologies.
