Leidos currently has an opening for a Carbon Capture Engineer to join our research support team in Pittsburgh, PA in supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), a U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) national laboratory (https://netl.doe.gov). This is an opportunity to conduct research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment, contributing to new areas of applied research to enhance the nation’s energy security and protect the environment for future generations.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary, scientific and technical-oriented national laboratory. NETL produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges to support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled professionals at three NETL research sites – Albany, OR, Morgantown, WV, and Pittsburgh, PA – conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE’s mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.

This position will support the operations of the NETL Direct Air Capture (DAC) Center, working with the Center’s director, engineering and construction staff. Located at NETL’s campus in Pittsburgh, PA, the NETL DAC Center is the nation’s premier technology development center for groundbreaking sorbent and solvent technologies designed to capture CO2 from the atmosphere, suitable for further utilization or sequestration. We are looking for a candidate to support the reports and documentation of test results for technologies being tested for external partners, as well as developing outreach documents at a variety of technical levels for other potential partners. The candidate will also support the ongoing internal testing efforts – to develop testing protocols, help with documentation and form factor development of NETL-made sorbent technologies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the principal investigator (PI), other researchers, engineering and support staff to accomplish project-related tasks.
  • Support the operations of the NETL Direct Air Capture Center:
    • Develop educational documents to support outreach efforts to potential industry and commercial partners.
    • Support ongoing partner testing by developing technical documents to aid data interpretation and contextualization.
    • Develop new testing protocols for the DAC Center’s new system for measuring part per trillion level trace contaminants.
    • Support the fabrication of NETL-developed materials into basic modules suitable for testing at the DAC Center.

Required Education, Experience & Other:

  • PhD degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering or related fields of study.
  • Lab-based experimental experience in the performance testing, characterization, and development of sorbent materials for direct air capture applications.
  • An understanding of common direct air capture form factors and their fabrication.
  • Ability to meet the requirement for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous research work in the form of conference presentations (oral or poster), and/or publications in relevant, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience working with multiple organizations in the direct air capture development community and have established relationships and contacts there.
  • Experience in the development of testing methodologies for direct air capture materials.

Salary Range for this position: $90K to $95K

Pay Range:

Pay Range $81,250.00 - $146,875.00
