Job Summary of the Vascular Technologist
According to unit and hospital policies and procedures, the Vascular Sonographer I is responsible for the performance of non-invasive and invasive vascular procedures including but not limited to carotid, venous, renal, and arterial doppler procedures including venous ablation and sclerotherapy. This position works closely with other healthcare team members to facilitate exceptional patient care and efficient completion of diagnostic studies and procedures while also promoting optimal unit operations. The Sonographer I adheres to the customer service standards while maintaining a clean, efficient, and safe work environment.
Responsibilities of the Vascular Technologist
- Utilize open, professional communication (verbal, non-verbal, and written) to directly interact with physicians, patients, guests, and other health team members.
- Make decisions of moderate difficulty that reflect both knowledge and good judgment.
- Handle confidential information regarding patient activities.
- Demonstrate an effective working knowledge of all equipment used in Radiology and related to their job functions.
- Participate in budget control.
- Work extended hours as needed to include evenings and weekends.
- Perform complete 2-dimensional, color flow, and Spectral Doppler exams according to protocol.
- Notify physicians of any positive findings that need attention prior to patient’s release.
- Provide preliminary measurements and interpretations of examinations.
- Perform necessary equipment checks and QC procedure and reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor. Maintain adequate supply of materials for Radiology.
- Assist in scheduling of patients. Work in additional patients. Make scheduling aware of cancellations or optimize examination availability.
- Review and revised lab protocol to maintain a high level of efficiency. Recommends change to supervisor.
- Attend required staff meetings and correlations conferences.
- Review performance and ensures compliance with accreditation, legal and other regulatory requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications of the Vascular Technologist
EDUCATION:
- Associate Degree
- Completion of an approved ultrasound technology education program or ARDMS recommended relevant work experience
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Registered Sonographer (RDMS) by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or CCI registry in Vascular Ultrasound (RVS)
- Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) required within 6 months of hire
- BLS required per St. David’s HealthCare policy
- Preferred: One year of experience performing adult vascular exams
- Preferred: Registered Technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), post- primary certification in Sonography. Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist with the Texas Department of State Health Services.
