Role Summary:

The Director Design and Research sets the long-term strategy and oversees the financial performance of the user experience at Alaska Airlines. As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of designers partnering closely with counterparts in product management and technology to deliver high quality user experiences.

Key Duties:
  • Establish strategic goals and direction for team of product designers and UX researchers.
  • Set long-term strategy for user-interface and interaction standards across Alaska's products.
  • Owns the entire design process for both interaction and visual design (within the brand style), overseeing the rapid development of site maps, user flows, wireframes and mocks.
  • Deploys best practices and an iterative design process for team to design for the full life cycle, from requirement refinement to high-fidelity prototypes.
  • Uses web analytics, A/B testing, and customer research to inform design strategy.
  • Ensures the design team works with their technology counterparts to understand and incorporate technical considerations in design efforts.
  • Oversees user experience research plans and usability testing to shape and inform the design team’s work.
  • Advocates for usability, accessibility, and good user experience design throughout the product development process.
  • Collaborates with product management to influence product strategy and road map.
  • Collaborates with marketing colleagues and ensures design team deliverables reflect the brand’s style guide.
  • Owns the development of creative assets for site-side advertising and campaign creation.
  • Works closely with a team of product managers and leads a team of designers to create an intuitive, cohesive, and delightful user experience across Alaska Airline products.
  • Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and disciplines.
  • Shape culture of the team through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills:

Required

  • 8 years of experience designing user experiences and interaction design for e-commerce.
  • 5 years of leadership experience, with at least 2 of those years directly leading people.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in HCI, Design, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
  • Significant experience driving user research and usability.
  • Demonstrated history of defining a design process in an agile development environment.
  • Fluent in agile product development concepts from the UX perspective.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Significant experience working on large consumer businesses.
  • Knowledge of the airline and/or travel industries and related technologies.
  • Deep working knowledge of Lean UX concepts.

Salary Range: $182,300-$291,700 / year Total Target Compensation Range (incl. bonus & equity): $238,790 - $381,010 Salary Details:

The pay range and total target compensation package listed above is the expected pay offered for this position at the start of employment. Your pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, your relevant experience/level, experience level, and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

Note:We don't typically hire at the top of the range.
