The Johnson Controls facility in Marinette, Wisconsin has been in operation for more than 100 years supporting generations of employees in manufacturing, research & development, technical services & training, customer services, marketing, product management and more. Our 700+ employees design, produce, market and support several leading fire protection brands including our globally recognized ANSUL products: fire extinguishers and mobile hose line units; specialized restaurant, vehicle, and industrial systems; sophisticated fire detection/suppression systems and a complete line of fire suppressing agents. Every year, hundreds of customers from around the world attend the ANSUL Fire School to learn the basics of hands-on portable extinguisher firefighting and we hold dozens of intense product training programs where our 1000+ authorized distributors are instructed and tested in system design, installation, and service. What You Will Do:

As a Development Chemist on the Special Hazards/Agents New Product Introduction Team, you will work on developing and testing next generation fire suppression agents. Responsibilities include research into new technologies, development of new technologies into commercial products, interfacing with 3rd party approval agencies, and assisting with new product commercialization and production scale-up via a stage-gate new product development process. Development activities may include the handling of flammable liquids, live fire tests requiring the use of PPE, and lifting loads up to thirty-five pounds.

A successful candidate for the position is a focused, creative thinker with a drive for results who is comfortable working independently or as part of a team. The candidate should also be comfortable trying new ideas, challenging assumptions, and learning from unsuccessful efforts and the work of others. The ability to pivot based on the needs of the business is critical.

What We Look For:

Required

  • Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Chemistry

  • 4 - 6 years’ experience in a research and development environment

  • Strong laboratory fundamentals including documentation and chemical hygiene/safety

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work as part of a cross-functional product development team

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Applications (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and Internet software and E-mail.

Preferred

  • Experience with surfactant and/or polymer chemistry

  • Experience with special hazards fire suppression

  • Sound understanding of statistical methods including Design of Experiments (DoE) desirable, Six Sigma coursework or certification a plus

  • Experience with stage-gate product development processes is desirable
