General Summary of Position
Assists the Pharmacist in preparing and distributing medications to patients. Performs designated advanced level technical functions to facilitate pharmacy operations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Consistently fulfills all the responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician I.
  • Under the supervision of the licensed Pharmacist, prepares oral, topical, and specific parenteral medications for dispensing to patients, including the selection, labeling, and packaging of appropriate pharmaceuticals, and filling of medication carts.
  • Enters physician orders into the hospital computer system to update/edit patient profiles
  • and charges.
  • Assists patients, nurses, physicians, and others with medication order requests and pharmacy related needs.
  • Monitors stock inventory levels and medication expiration dates for pharmacy areas and replenishes medications as needed. Conducts monthly/periodic inspections of patient care/department areas.
  • Fills and replaces medications in the automated medication dispensing machines and transports to appropriate nursing unit(s).
  • Prepares mini bags, large volume parenterals, mini bag plus, etc. using aseptic techniques, including STATS.
  • Delivers and retrieves medications, including narcotics, and pharmacy supplies to/from patient care and satellite pharmacy areas.
  • Compounds products in bulk, or per individual order, and prepares private stock orders and individual unit-of-use packaging, when not otherwise available.
  • Completes and maintains controlled substance inventory log/records.
  • Participates in orienting new Pharmacy Technicians to department operations and the
  • computer system.
  • Maintains clean and orderly workstations.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • 1 year of technical or other specialized hospital training required

    Experience

    • Eighteen months of hospital experience required
    • A diploma from an approved pharmacy technician training program may be an acceptable alternative for six months of experience

    Licenses and Certifications

    • DC DOH - Pharmacy Technician Registration required
    • PTCB - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or equivalent national certification within 180 Days required

    This position has a hiring range of $20.941 - $31.852
