Georgetown University Hospital’s Solid Organ Transplant & Hepatology
Intermediate Care Unit (S4-2) in the recently opened Verstandig Pavilion,
situated on Georgetown University's campus. The cutting-edge Verstandig
Pavilion is equipped with all-private inpatient rooms and state-of-the-art
medical equipment, ensuring an environment that prioritizes excellence in
patient care. The Transplant IMC shares a floor with its own Surgical
Transplant Intensive Care Unit (ICU), promoting seamless patient throughput
between different acuities.
This 28-bed unit has been recognized by the American
Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) with a BEACON Award for Excellence
through 2026. Clinical Nurses on S42 provide expert care to acutely ill adults
that are waiting for or have recently received a solid organ transplant (liver,
kidney, pancreas, intestine) or have undergone other hepatobiliary surgeries
(TACE, liver resection, Whipple). MedStar Georgetown is one of only six centers
in the United States that perform intestinal transplants and averages over 100
liver transplants per year. At MedStar Georgetown we also perform kidney and
pancreas transplants and serve patients regionally, nationally, and
internationally. Additional medical diagnoses include end-stage renal disease,
end-stage liver failure, hepatitis, chest pain, cardiac arrhythmias, sepsis,
CHF, and GI bleeds. All beds are equipped to provide continuous cardiac and
pulse oximetry bedside monitoring, and nurses are essential in managing
high-risk medications and performing in-depth discharge teaching. Nurses work
with the interdisciplinary team - including physicians, pharmacists, and nurse
practitioners - to deliver intense pre- and post-surgical care that is focused
on infection prevention and patient education. The nursing team is a highly
educated and motivated group of professionals that participate in collaborative
governance, achieves certifications, and drives positive patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
As a Clinical Nurse you will deliver proficient nursing care to patients and families whose needs range from uncomplicated to highly complex. You will identify current and potential complex problems of specific patient populations and critically analyzes trends and changes in patient status and plans appropriate interventions directly or indirectly through other nurses.

Qualifications
- ADN, BSN, MSN, or CNL from an accredited School of Nursing required.
- Prior Clinical Nursing Experience preferred.
- Active DC RN License and Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers required.
