Nurse Manager of Operations

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – Duke University Hospital

Located in Duke Central Tower, Unit 2B

Department Profile:

Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.

The Duke Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a 20 bed unit in a Level I trauma center. Areas of subspecialty expertise include cardiovascular surgery, respiratory failure, neurosurgery, stem cell transplantation, immunodeficiencies, hematologic and oncologic emergencies, sepsis, multi-organ system dysfunction, and congenital heart disease. Available advanced treatment modalities for these critical care patients include Extracorporeal Life Support (ECMO), high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, and non-invasive ventilation.Ideal candidates would be able to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team and seek opportunities for professional development.

Work Hours & Shifts:

Full-Time, 40 hours per week

Job Summary:

  • Manage andcoordinate patient care and personnel needs.
  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate ambulatory health care services, programs, and activities.
  • Manage various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, orientation, performance appraisals, promotions, and scheduling.
  • Collaborate in the development, implementation and expansion of learning opportunities and skill development.
  • Analyze, develop, and maintain an effective and efficient nursing care delivery system that reflects patient and family needs across the continuum.
  • Communicate and collaborate with multiple disciplines and departments with a focus on access and strategic growth.
  • Promote education for patients, patient families and the community; participate in direct patient care activities as a targeted strategy for role modeling or information gathering.
  • Collaborate with nursing colleagues within Duke Children's to promote optimal utilization of nursing resources among the various clinics.
  • Identify clinical operational needs; manage equipment and supplies and monitor equipment maintenance.
  • Assess the environment and make recommendations to ensure optimal patient comfort, safety, and compliance with various regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate to determine fiscal requirements; submit budgetary recommendations, including necessary nursing personnel and patient care materials necessary for the provision of care.
  • Cultivate exemplary customer service throughout the organization; promote effective communication skills to include, but not limited to problem solving, assertiveness, and support for team members, feedback, active listening, and conflict resolution. Develop and implement processes to enhance clinic operations and practices for ongoing quality improvement.
  • Develop, document, implement, and monitor written policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties.
  • Recruit, retain and develop top nursing talent.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required:

  • 3 years of nursing experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required.

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS (or higher) certification required.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • MSN preferred.
  • Prior management experiencehighly preferred. This can include extensive charge nurse or team lead experience.
