At Houston Methodist, the Physician Assistant (PA) Resident position will enter the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center Postgraduate Cardiovascular (CV) Residency for Physician Assistants, a twelve month program, with an elective rotation in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, offered in conjunction with Weill Cornell Medical College as well as an existing affiliation with University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) PA Program. This position will be given the opportunity to learn and improve basic surgical sciences as well as clinical and operative skills. The PA Resident position will assist on major CV cases early on during the training. This position affects direct patient care according to the Board of Physician Assistant Examiners in the State of Texas and Houston Methodist policies and procedures.

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides patient care in the CVICU during daily morning rounds, developing treatment plans and documenting patient's plan in daily progress notes.
  • Conducts pre-operative evaluation of patients in clinic with surgeons to determine if patient needs surgery. Orders all appropriate pre-op diagnostic studies.
  • Uses therapeutic communication to establish a relationship with patients, families and interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care. Communicates in an active, positive and effective manner to all interprofessional team members and reports pertinent patient care and family data in a comprehensive and unbiased manner, listens and responds to the ideas of others.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides first and second assist with the surgeon in cardiac and vascular surgeries.
  • Assists in complex endovascular procedures.
  • Advocates on patient/family's behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns, utilizing appropriate resources.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs delegated functions of evaluation, treatment, and management of cardiac surgery patients for inpatient and outpatient setting including writing daily progress notes on post-operative patients, clinic notes, H&Ps, and discharge planning.
  • Performs quality and safe diagnostic, surgical and/or therapeutic procedures ordering needed imaging studies, necessary for defined patient populations.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Attends educational conferences, lab and lectures to further develop skills in cardiac surgery.
  • Identifies own learning needs, consults with healthcare team experts and seeks continuing education opportunities to meet those needs.

EDUCATION
  • Graduate from accredited Physician Assistant program by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and successful completion of NCCPA examination

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
  • PA - Physician Assistant - State Licensure -- mandatory once admitted to the Program AND
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) AND
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA) within 30 days
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Will become proficient in Endoscopic Vein Harvesting-Open heart Surgery: principles and practice of first assisting; Vascular surgery: principles and practice of first assisting; Endovascular procedures: Femoral access, femoral closure techniques, basic diagnostic angiography
