Job Summary and Qualifications

The MCS and Shock Coordinator is a registered or advanced practice nurse whose primary function is to augment the capability of the MCS and shock program in effective management and delivery of quality care to patients presenting with heart failure and/or shock. This role involves 24-hour accountability for clinical practice, coordination of resources, program development, and standards compliance in a rotational on-call coverage. This role participates in delivery of patient-specific care, as directed, and fosters service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction across the market.

· Navigate shock patients for care escalation, extracorporeal life support, and advanced therapies.

· Coordinate care for MCS and Shock patients, both within and external referrals into St. David’s HealthCare facilities.

· Plan, coordinate, and implement device specific care for pre/post-VAD patients, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

· Coordinate critical care transport of MCS, ECMO, and Shock patients in collaboration with patient transfer center, ambulance agencies, transport team, accepting/sending provider, and hospital leadership.

· Evaluate patients for candidacy for MCS, track and coordinate necessary testing.

· Communicate and collaborate within the multidisciplinary MCS and Shock teams.

· Serve as a liaison for heart failure and shock patients for other care providers.

· Participate in certification and recertification of the VAD program.

· Maintain compliance with regulatory/accrediting agencies.

· Participate in ECMO/VAD/Shock data registries and data entry.

· Assist with the development of program Quality Improvement plans and activities, including maintaining databases and supporting process improvement initiatives.

· Represent Heart Failure, Shock, and MCS programs through involvement in hospital and community activities, and prepare cases for conferences, discussions, and case reviews.

· Provide routine education events for staff, and education to the community as needed.

· Manage equipment, supplies, and charges for MCS and shock patients, in conjunction with hospital liaisons with goals of quality and cost efficiency.

· Help in hospital daily operations by engaging in projects aligned with the hospital's mission and values such as assisting in the preparation of the departmental budget, ensuring the provision of a safe and comforting environment, maintaining patient confidentiality and standard safety precautions.

· Ensure medical record documentation is timely, accurate, and complete

· Actively participate in administering patient care and management of related service.

· Communicate with staff and physicians on administrative issues and follow-up to bring closure to such issues.

· Take call for the ECMO/VAD program

Requirements

Experience

  • 2 years of critical care experience in a hospital setting
  • 1 year experience in management of organ failure/transplant/VAD/ECMO patients preferred

Education

  • BSN Required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current State of Texas Registered Nurse (RN) license or Compact Registered Nursing License. If Compact License, Texas license must be obtained within 90 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as per St. David’s Healthcare policy
  • ACLS certification as per St. David’s Healthcare policy
  • NIHSS certification required as per St. David’s Healthcare policy
