The IT Systems Engineer II is responsible for providing advanced Tier II support by troubleshooting, installing, configuring, testing, maintaining, and repairing applications and servers within a laboratory infrastructure. The Main Responsibilities
- Maintain health of laboratory applications and equipment, such as HPE Servers, Windows Servers, Linux Servers, Backup solutions, and applications.
- Provide advanced Tier II support for two geographically separated network operations centers (NOCS).
- Ensure systems are within Information Assurance standards by testing and implementing security updates, managing Group Policy Objects (GPO), conducting Assured Compliance Assessment Solution (ACAS) and Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) scans.
- Knowledgeable in security requirements and techniques for protecting computer systems/networks from attacks, viruses, data tampering, unauthorized system entry, and other emerging threats.
- Provide Tier II technical input in system installations, system administration, server infrastructure analysis and improvement
- Troubleshoot, configure, maintain, and monitor Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Windows Server, Trellix ePO, MS SQL, RSA appliances, System Center Suite (SCOM/SCCM/SCVMM), Solarwinds, Veritas NetBackup, Unitrends Backup appliances, SharePoint, Remedy and Exchange servers before Tier III elevation.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to junior technicians
- Interacts extensively with the internal engineering, support teams (FE/FOP), and equipment/software vendors to resolve problems.
What We Look For in a Candidate
Qualifications & Critical Skills:
- TS/SCI security clearance required.
- Security+ CE or equivalent IAT/IAM/IASAE Level 2 of DoD 8570.1 is required
- Working experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7/8/9
- Working experience with Windows Server 2012 R2/2016/2019/2022
- Working experience with Hyper-V and VMWare Virtualization
- Understanding of High Availability administration
- Proficiency with SQL DB Administration
- Technical skills and understanding of information systems, network protocols, firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, log management, network behavior analysis, vulnerability scan tools and processes.
- Ability to provide the proactive status of assigned work, ability to estimate the level of effort for future work and accomplish tasks with minimal guidance.
- Critical thinking and ability to work in collaborative environment with multiple disciplines.
- Understand patch compliance and system audit data.
- Previous experience in IT System security and hardening a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Up to 15% travel can be expected due to possible deployments to lab facilities and other NOC locations.
- Bachelor’s degree in an Information Technology field
- At least 5 years applicable work experience.
- Demonstrates a high-level of proficiency in System Administration.
- CASP+CE, SSCP preferred, but not required.
- Microsoft Certifications a plus.

The starting salary for this role differs based on the employee's primary work location. Employees typically do not start at the top of the range, though compensation depends on each individual's qualifications.
Location Based Pay Ranges
$109,330 - $145,770 in these states: VA.
