Job Description Summary
Assists the Director in the managing of day-to-day operation of the Respiratory Therapy department. Provides guidance, instruction, and encouragement to the Respiratory Care staff in areas such as ventilator management, physiologic monitoring, arterial blood has, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and all other therapeutic modalities. Performs the above clinical duties on a regular basis. Collaborates and cooperates with interdepartmental personnel to facilitate optimal delivery of respiratory care insuring that cost effective and safe patient care is provided to all patients. Assists in the implementation of all policies, protocols and procedures and ensures that staff education and compliance occur. Supervises pulmonary functions and maintains records of licensure and competencies. Assures that the arterial blood gas processes are maintained in accordance with all state and professional regulations. Demonstrates competency in all respiratory care modalities. Coordinates staffing according to activity and acuity.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
Minimum of a 2year (Associate) degree required.
Minimum Registered Respiratory Therapist certification required.
Minimum Work Experience
3 – 5 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist in an acute setting. Leadership/charge experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: STANDARD
Assures that shift duties/activities are coordinated and communicated with all members of the health care team and are based on individual skill level and competency.
Performs respiratory therapy duties as directed. Aids staff as workload warrants.
Assists with oversight of and participates in Education programs provided by Respiratory Therapy i.e. smoking cessation
ESSENTIAL FUCTION: DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR SUPPORT
Maximizes efficient department operations for assigned shift according to staffing guidelines.
Serves as clinical, problem-solving, and decision-making resource for staff during assigned shift and in director’s absence.
Assists with patient/family rounding as assigned.
Participates in department projects and hospital committees as needed.
Interviews staff and participates in selection process.
Contributes to staff evaluations, corrective actions, and competency verification.
Assists with staff scheduling.
Assists with ordering of supplies, keeping inventory at PAR level.
Assists with maintaining ISTAT department competencies, QC, and CAPS.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: EDUCATION/COMPETENCIES
Identifies department, staff, and patient learning needs.
Accurately assesses staff skills required for provision of quality patient care.
Assists in planning and developing in-services and continuing education programs to meet learning needs identified in PMIs, individual educational needs, new policy/procedures, PI and new equipment.
Assist in maintaining and tracking clinical competencies for self and all department staff.
