POSITION SUMMARY

To provide accurate, complete and timely coding of diseases and operations for the purposes of compiling statistical data, obtaining reimbursement and production of clinical data for indexing. Serves as mentor/educator for Coding Specialist I.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Formal Education / Training:
High School Graduate
American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or eligible.
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or eligible.
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)

Workplace Experience:
At least five years of inpatient coding experience to include all payers.

Equipment and Skills Training:
Anatomy and Physiology required
Medical Terminology required
Computer skills
Medi-tech in-house computer system
Codefinder/DRG finder software
Ability to access all types of coding references; on-line and hard copy
Demonstrated coding accuracy rate as per department standard.
Demonstrated coding productivity as per department standard

Physical Environment:
Office

Physical Effort:
Prolonged sitting, repetitive motion i.e. keyboarding, bending, reaching, and stretching to retrieve items up to 15 pounds.
Prolonged viewing of computer screens and charts consisting of typed and handwritten entries.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
  1. Accurately assign ICD-10-CM codes and MS-DRGs to inpatient charts based on information obtained from the medical record.
  2. Accurately assign valid ICD-10-CM and CPT codes and APC's to outpatient charts based on medical information obtained from the medical record.
  3. Accurately abstract required data from the patient medical record.
  4. Maintains acceptable department coding/abstracting productivity level.
  5. Maintains acceptable department coding/abstracting quality level.
  6. Coordinates with Clinical Documentation Specialists regarding clinical clarifications; questions and helps to promote good teamwork efforts with the CDI Program.
  7. Utilizes appropriate reference materials which include basic computer knowledge and skills.
  8. Knowledgeable of compliance issues regarding documentation and coding.
  9. Ability to efficiently use computer and software relating to coding functions.
  10. Ability to read and comprehend all medical information recorded in patient's medical record.
  11. Stays current with resource department material.
  12. Serves as a mentor/ambassador to Coding Specialist I positions.
