Job Summary:
In this hybrid role, the Senior Operations Technology Systems Engineer will design, implement, and support Operations Technology systems including MES databases and applications, HMI systems, device integration systems, and general process control automation.
As part of the Automation Group, work closely with Controls Systems Engineers, Operations, the Continuous Improvement Team, and business teams on projects to expand and improve Operations Technology systems. Identify production and quality issues that could be improved or solved using automation. Manage software vendors, as well as internal teams, during the commissioning of new Operations Technology systems
Travel Requirement: Occasional. Up to 10% travel to assist another Charter Steel plant or attend training.
Schedule: First shift with on-call rotation
What You Will Do:
Evaluate and recommend automation and manufacturing computer need.
Design and program HMI and MES computer systems.
Maintain production-related control and computer systems including Level 1 PLC communications and Level 2 MES systems.
Ensure proper software documentation.
Integrate third-party devices and systems to core MES system.
Coordinate upgrades to existing systems and implementation of new systems.
Oversee commissioning of new systems. Work as part of Commissioning Team as necessary.
Maintain MES to ERP communications.
Modeling of production processes as part of MES development.
Act in project management capacity overseeing automation or MES vendors on capital projects.
Assist in training of Electricians, Electrical Technicians and Programmers. Mentor trainees.
Available as support to a 24/7 operation.
Identify production problems that may be solved or improved using automation or data collection techniques.
Follow Environmental, Quality and Safety Management System procedures and requirements.

What You Will Need:
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Computer, Software Engineering, or Computer Science.
Six plus years’ experience with industrial automation and MES systems design and implementation.
Six plus years’ experience with Wonderware/Aveva and Intouch and with MS Visual Studio and MS SQL Server.
Device integration experience via serial, TC/PIP, and proprietary protocols, including Industrial Communications networks.
Experience in all of the following technologies:
Experience in maintaining high-availability systems.
Solid knowledge of PLC controls systems (Siemens or Allen-Bradley)
Strong understanding of Object Oriented Programming.
Experience or coursework in Agile software development methods.
Solid mathematics and physical science background. Capable of modeling physical systems in software.
Ability to build relationships with multiple levels within the organization.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Good organizational skills.
Project management experience.
Nice to Have:
Five plus years’ experience with automation systems in the steel industry.
Good working knowledge of Power Distribution and Power Electronics.
Familiarity with networking concepts.
High-level PLC programming.
MES to ERP integration experience.
Resource management experience.
Familiarity with Inductive Ignition
Robotic Industry 4.0 knowledge
