ROLE SUMMARY:
This is a unique opportunity to shape and drive our state tax strategy across a wide range of complex tax matters, including corporate income taxes, indirect taxes, credits & incentives, and legislative policy. In this pivotal role, you will be at the forefront of state and local income and franchise tax audits, managing high-stakes controversy matters while collaborating across the business to ensure alignment with Anheuser-Busch's objectives. You will leverage your deep technical knowledge and experience in navigating complex state tax landscapes to deliver strategic solutions, influence policy decisions, and mitigate risk. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tax Controversy:
- Manage state income tax controversy practice, from audit kick-off, through administrative appeals, and ultimately potential tax litigation
- Operate as primary contact for state auditors
- Respond to information and data requests
- Craft responses to auditor questions and interrogatories
- Coordinate technical responses with Director, State Income Taxes
- Engage with national and local advisors regarding administrative hearings and litigation
- Perform tax research and analysis related to audit assessment
- Support the implementation of technology tools and automation of processes
Tax Planning and Research:
- Participate in state income tax planning, specifically advising on state audit considerations and risks, as well as audit documentation requirements
- Participate in discussions with senior management on state and local tax-related issues
- Include affirmative tax filing positions in current audits to secure refunds, or offset assessments
- Research and document tax technical positions to support conclusions on various state income tax matters
- Challenge existing practices & test new ideas
Tax Compliance:
- Occasionally assist in the state income tax compliance process, including analyzing financial data, drawing tax conclusions, and coordinating with outside vendors on the preparation of state returns.
- Effectively manage third-party advisers who assist A-B in meeting its filing obligations and developing tax initiatives
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business
- Masters Degree in Tax, JD/LL.M in Taxation, and/or CPA certification
- Minimum 7 years of relevant tax experience
- Relevant experience with state income tax controversy matters
- Working knowledge of federal and international tax matters
- Experience with ‘Big Four’ accounting firms, law firms, large corporations with complex structures and transactions, or State government revenue agency
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel (e.g.Pivot tables, VLOOKUP’s)
- Ability to work outside of comfort zone
- Work well independently and in a team environment along with operating as a team player
- Work with all levels within the corporation
- Ability to use tax knowledge and previous experience to add value and assist in meeting the department's objectives while working in a fast-paced organization
