The Registered Nurse - Forensic Nurse Examiner (RN-FNE) participates as a member of the Sexual Assault Forensic Nurse Examiner (SAFE) program, providing victims of sexual assault with sensitive, coordinated, and appropriate care. The RN-FNE provides the forensic medical exam in all cases of sexual assault as requested by victim or law enforcement, and provides emergency and prophylactic care and information regarding proper medical follow-up for reported and non-reported cases of sexual assault that presented.
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing required and
  • Bachelor's degree of Nursing preferred
Experience
  • 1-2 years Experience as a practicing registered nurse required
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Possesses and maintains Maryland Registered Nurse license required and
  • Forensic Nurse Examiner-Adult - RNFNEA Possesses and maintains Maryland Board of Nursing Certification as a Forensic Nurse Examiner (refer to Code of Maryland 10.27.21.01-08) within 180 Days required or
  • Must have completed a MBON approved FNE-A (Adolescent/Adult) Didactic training course required or
  • Must be pursuing required FNE-A clinical requirements per MBON regulations required and
  • Must comply with MBON regulations and obtain FNE-A certification within 12 months from the date of FNE-A Didactic training course within 1 Year required
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Participates in a 24-hour, 7-day a week on -call schedule, responding within 60 minutes when called to provide the forensic medical exam in all cases of sexual assault. When required by subpoena, will testify in court. Welcome to participate as a committee member at the bimonthly meeting of the Sexual Assault Response Team collaborating with community resources.
  • Completes timely initial and ongoing patient assessments, considering the physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural, and developmental needs for patients and families. Based on the assessment of physical, emotional, bio-physical, and spiritual needs, provides direct patient care and evaluates outcomes. Incorporates the principles of patient-centered care.
  • Communicates effectively with victims to ensure proper education and identification of needs. Applies age-appropriate comfort measures.
  • Communicates clinical information clearly and accurately in verbal and written format. Clearly and accurately documents pertinent information in the patient's medical record. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Provides emergency and prophylactic care and information regarding proper medical follow-up for reported and non-reported cases of sexual assault that present.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment of caring for patient at all times. Identifies potential and actual patient safety issues and acts accordingly per hospital and unit policy and procedure.
  • In coordinating the delivery of patient care, delegates activities to unlicensed staff in accordance with system policies, principles of Patient-Centered Care, and the Maryland Nurse Practice Act, and retains responsibility for these delegated activities.
  • Maintains high customer service standards. Proactively addresses customer concerns. Identifies and responds to questions and requests from internal and external customers in courteous, positive manner. Responds to customer service complaints in a timely and appropriate manner.
