Summary:

Under direction of the surgeon and anesthetist sets up prepares and operates a heart-lung machine to provide life support services to patients during heart operations. Sets up prepares and operates associated monitoring equipment. Orders and interprets laboratory tests. Adds blood to the circuit gives medications and makes other adjustments as necessary.

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides cardiopulmonary support for patients undergoing open-hear and other heart operations under the direction of a surgeon:

Assembles heart-lung machine equipment in an aseptic manner and tests for reliability.

Evaluates patients physique and condition and fills oxygenator with correct solution.

Orders and interprets laboratory tests.

Selects the appropriate oxygenator and perfusate for the type of operation.

Conducts the perfusion to maintain the patients blood volume blood pressure peripheral resistance oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange acid-base balance hematocrit and temperature at appropriate values.

Adds blood to circuit as necessary adjusts oxygen and carbon dioxide flow to oxygenator and maintains volume of apparatus for optimal systemic blood flow.

At conclusion infuses blood.

Sets up prepares and operates monitoring systems for blood pressure intro-cardiac pressures and electrocardiogram during operations.

Administers blood and blood products IV solutions and drugs while on bypass.

Participates in determination of special equipment requirements such as intro-aortic balloon.

Assembles tests for reliability and calibrates equipment. Does minor repairs to equipment and recommends needed repairs.

Maintains records on all actions taken and results of tests.

Provides on-the-job training to new employees.

Keeps abreast of improvements and participates in the evaluation of new techniques.

Provides circulatory assistance and/or mechanical support for patients throughout the hospital as required by operating intro-aortic balloon pump etc.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Requires formal training at an accredited school of perfusion technology with a minimum of six months clinical training culminating in a Bachelors degree in circulation technology.

Ability to carry out complex medical support procedures requiring planning and analysis of the patients status type of operation and type of equipment.

Capacity for calm and reasoned judgment in meeting emergencies.

Knowledge of normal pump bypass chemistry and physiological measurements.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process

EXPERIENCE:

Perfusionist with certification. Experience preferred but not required. .

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Considerable exposure to Operating Room environment. Works with patient blood and with some exposure to diseases associated with blood.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Acts under the direction of surgeon performing support services to patients during heart surgery.

None.
