Pathologist Assistant - Traveler

Lic/Certs: BLS and ASCP PA Certification preferred
13 week Pathologist Assistant travel assignment

SUMMARY
The pathologist assistant examines, describes, and sections biopsies and resection specimens, requiring independent medical judgment with indirect supervision. They prepare frozen section tissue and slides for rapid diagnosis. The pathologist assistant performs general lab functions, technologist activities and quality assurance while also maintaining laboratory equipment, supplies and records.
ESSENTIAL WORK FUNCTIONS
- Examine, describe, dissect and section biopsies and resection specimens, including dictation of salient gross features under the direction of staff pathologists
- Summarize patient medical history as recorded on the requisition form. Obtain/review pertinent clinical and radiologic data from electronic medical records.
- Review requisitions and specimen containers for correct labeling and demographic information
- Orient, freeze, cut, and stain frozen sections for intra-operative microscopic evaluation
- Assure proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite
- Perform basic troubleshooting of technical systems used in the course of gross room operations
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Successful completion of an accredited pathologist assistant program
- Two years’ recent experience as a pathologist assistant required
- Other certifications and licenses may be required for this position
- Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills, ability to read/comprehend written instructions, ability to follow verbal instructions, PC skills
- Physical Abilities: Remain in a stationary position, move about, move equipment (50-100lbs), pushing, pulling, bending.
REQUIRED ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Interpersonal Skills - to work effectively with a variety of personnel (professional and ancillary) to present a positive attitude and a professional appearance.
- Technical/Motor Skills - Ability to grasp, fine manipulation, pushing/pulling and able to move about when assisting with procedures and/or using department equipment.
- Mental Requirements – Must be able to cope with frequent contact with the general public, customers, and meeting deadlines under pressure. Must be able to work under close supervision occasionally as well as working without assistance from other personnel. Must be able to contend with irregular activity schedules occasionally and continuous concentration to detail.
- Sensory – Visual acuity, ability to effectively communicate
Other Requirements:
Expertise in assisting with autopsies and surgical pathology specimen processing is essential. ASCP Pathologists' Assistant (PA) certification and BLS certification are required.
