POSITION SUMMARY
Performs technical duties of Specimen Preparation Technician at a superior level of competency and efficiency. This position may require special knowledge of and skills in one or more of the following areas: TIQ/problem resolution, training, workflow management, processing non-routine samples, or referral testing protocols. Solves problems arising in management of routine procedures as well as more sophisticated or unusual tests. Is involved with continuous quality improvement, development of procedures and practices, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. Provides technical and procedural oversight in concert with the shift supervisor and coordinator. Assists in training of new employees on the bench and validating procedures.

CORE FUNCTIONS
1.Performs all duties of Specimen Preparation Technician utilizing the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively meet the needs of the client. Performs the functions of the appropriate area of specialization which may include preparation of samples for transport to referral labs, resolution of customer problems and/or complaints, workflow management, and the training of Specimen Preparation Technicians. Assists Specimen Preparation Coordinators with daily operational oversight for the shift. Provides technical support to Specimen Preparation Technician positions within the department.

2.Focuses on quality by ensuring performance of all quality control procedures. Ensures that quality assurance and maintenance records are kept on all equipment within the department, and that such records meet the requirements of accrediting and licensing agencies. Meets or exceeds department quality performance metrics on all work performed. Documents performance to immediate supervisor or coordinator as required by accepted means. Follows established methods and procedures. Complies with all safety rules, and follows defined safety practices. Complies with the supervisor and manager in the implementation of new policies and procedures. Is involved in continuous quality improvement. Identifies, resolves and provides input on all matters relevant to the assigned shift.

3.Participates in departmental financial monitoring and improvement. Supports waste reduction and expense reduction programs. Assists supervisor and manager in monitoring and controlling expenses throughout the year.

4.Meets departmental standards for productivity as currently defined. Provides input and feedback to the manager/supervisor when requested in the development and training of Specimen Processing Technicians. Participates in the colleague feedback process for other Specimen Preparation Technicians. Responsible for maintaining technical competence in all assigned tasks, and verifying competence annually.

5.Communicates courteously and professionally with internal and external customers. Interacts with co-workers with an emphasis on teamwork and a focus on customer service Serves as a communication resource, interacting with both internal and external clients; responds to inquiries for result verification or quality issues related to on-site testing. Properly escalates issues and problems to the appropriate coordinator, supervisor or other member of management to ensure proper resolution. Directs questions to appropriate resource including Supervisor, Manager, Technical Specialist or other resource.

6.Assists with oversight of department activities in supervisor's absence. Promotes supports and exhibits behavior consistent with the Company's Mission, Vision and Values and customer-focused quality service. Follows the guidelines in the Code of Conduct.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum age requirement of 18.
  • Must be a high school graduate, or have achieved equivalency through the GED exam or other means.
  • Position requires a minimum of 12 months experience as a Specimen Preparation Technician, or equivalent processing experience.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability, critical judgment, and basic leadership skills are required.
  • Knowledge of department policies and practices is required.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates' degree.
