Position Summary


Responsible for the technical oversight of an application portfolio and setting technical direction for the portfolio through application roadmaps, technical debt and solution architecture work products. Acts as the technical expert in their domain and the “go-to” person assisting both business and development teams. Knowledgeable regarding technology trends and possess excellent soft-skills, including the ability to communicate clearly with all levels of the organization and act in a collaborative manner.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Partnering with the business to understand their needs and defining an architecture strategy to fulfill those needs.

  • Creation of architecture artifacts, such as subsystem walkthroughs, system context and logical / physical infrastructure diagrams to support solution delivery.

  • Setting system performance expectations and determining required infrastructure, in conjunction with the Big Lots infrastructure team.

  • Creation of application roadmaps, charting the evolution of an application portfolio by modeling the current state, intermediate state and future state architectures.

  • Defining architecture standards which will be leveraged by both the architecture and development teams to support project delivery.

  • Managing technical debt and mitigation strategy for the debt.

  • Partnering with the development teams on technical direction and governing project deliverables to ensure the architecture vision is fulfilled.

  • Providing technical leadership on complex projects and solving complex problems.

  • Mentoring and guiding less experienced staff.

  • Acting as an escalation point to resolve production issues.

  • Responsible for SLAs of applications in that area.

Qualification

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • BS or BA degree in Computer Science or Information Systems
  • 7 – 9 years of Information Technology experience
  • Point of Sale experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in multiple architecture domains and various technologies (i.e. Java,  JBoss, IBM MQ, SOAP / REST Web Services, SQL Server, Oracle databases, etc.)
  • Extensive experience with web development and web technologies, including java-based web applications
  • Knowledge of technology trends and their application to the retail industry
  • Knowledge of the software development cycle, including agile and waterfall practices
  • Extensive experience with the evaluation and selection of vendor products
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to partner and communicate with all levels of the organization
  • Capable of prioritizing work and escalating issues impacting delivery to management, as needed
  • Prior retail industry experience is preferred
  • TOGAF experience is desirable
