Job SummaryPrepares (processes, embeds, cuts, stains) tissue specimen for microscopic examination by a pathologist so that a diagnosis can be made.Essential Functions:Prepares tissues for microscopic examination including embedding tissue; microtome sectioning; routine H & E staining, coverslipping, and labeling slides.Performs dissection and gross description of specimens for reference and other tissue as needed.May prepare specimens for frozen section examination by a pathologist including the freezing, cutting, staining and preparation of slides. About the Unit:TheCardiovascular Recovery Unit (CVRU)is a fast paced, highly specialized 9-bed critical care unit located right next to the Meijer Heart Center OR’s that is dedicated to providing world class recovery care of patients who have undergone all types of cardiac surgical procedures. Typical surgeries include Coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), valve replacement/repair, aortic dissection repair, cardiac ablations, and TAVR’s. Our nurses are fully ICU trained (including on IABP’s, PA catheters, sheaths, ventilators,etc) and provide the complete recovery care needed for these patients until they are hemodynamically stable and ready to transfer to the progressive care unit or to the Cardiothoracic ICU if the critical care needs are anticipated to last greater than 24 hrs. Our nurses have a lot of autonomy and work very closely with the cardiac surgery team to make sure these complex patients receive everything they need to assure optimal outcomes. About the unit6 Meijer Heart Center (6 Heart) is a 46-bed cardiac and vascular progressive/stepdown unit at the Meijer Heart Center. The primary patient population served include patients with various cardiac and vascular diseases requiring medical, procedural, or surgical interventions. About the unit3E/G is a unique team structure at Blodgett Hospital composed of two separate units but one team. 3E is a 24 bed Med/Surg unit with some Medical Orthopedic patients while 3G is a 22 bed Orthopedic unit primarily serving Total Joint Replacement Patients. 7MHC is a 46 bed unit that cares for cardio-thoracic patients after surgery. We specialize in both cardiac, pulmonary and transplant care.Our primary patient populations are post-operative coronary artery bypass (CABG), cardiac valve surgeries, lung surgeries, heart and lung transplant, and VAD patients (an artificial heart pump).We admit post-surgical patients day of surgery, after the cardiovascular recovery unit or from the Cardiothoracic ICU (CTCC) depending on their procedure and clinical needs. If a patient needs intensive care, they are transferred to CTCC and return back to us when their condition has stabilized. Our patients are very complex and require medical, physical and emotional support.Strong clinical skills in cardiac, pulmonary and post-surgical assessment are necessary. Examples are rhythm assessment, identification of abnormalities with cardiac and pulmonary auscultation and surgical site management. About the unit1H is a 22 bed adult critical care unit at Blodgett Hospital.1H cares for medical ICU patients as well as some surgical ICU patients. As a team member on 1H, you will see a wide variety of different ages and types of diagnoses and participate in many different types of ICU level care. Some of those diagnoses include stroke, sepsis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and respiratory failure. About the unitThe Neuro Critical Care Unit is a 14 bed Intensive care in the Meijer Heart Center at Butterworth hospital.The Neuro ICU is part of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the Medical Center, and it is West Michigan’s largest stroke center. We specialize in the care of patients with stroke or other neurological conditions. These conditions include Hemorrhagic stroke, Ischemic stroke, seizures, and Hydrocephalus with critical care needs. Our nurses are part of a collaborative team and work alongside our nurse techs, intensivists, APPs, pharmacists, therapists, social workers, chaplains, and secretaries to provide specialized care to everyone. This team of nurses has worked to develop a culture of collaboration, kindness, teamwork, and learning. About the UnitOur Pediatric Cardiology and Nephrology unit is an 18 bed higher acuity unit located in our Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. The unit specializes in complex populations, including cardiology, nephrology, and burn patients. Other patients include stable trach/vents and neurosurgical patients requiring an external ventricular drain. Our team values the relationships they form with patients and families as they often have a longer stay on the unit and come back in the future due to their chronic conditions. About the unitThe Helen DeVos Children's Surgery department completes over 8000 cases per year. It has 8 operating rooms including one with a fully integrated MRI suite. About the unit6 South specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, pre or post heart or lung transplant, Left Ventricular Assist devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, and respiratory failure necessitating Bipap, or Hi-Flo Nasal Cannula. About this Unit6 North is a 38 bed Cardiovascular unit that specializes in caring for adult patients with Heart Failure, cardiac dysrhythmias, newly implanted pacemakers and defibrillators, LVAD readmits, pulmonary hypertension and cardiac conditions requiring medical treatment. Most patients receive continuous telemetry monitoring.Care is provided 24 hours per day 7 days a week.Individuals would want to work on this unit do to the large variety of cardiovascular and progressive care experiences that allow for a robust skill set. If they were to transfer to another unit, you would gain time management, proficiency in the management of patient with complex conditions. About the unit9 Children's is a Pediatric Hematology and Oncology floor with 24 private rooms at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. In addition, this floor cares for Blood and Marrow Transplant as well as surgical overflow patients. Team members are drawn to 9 Childrens for the opportunity to get to know patients and families that are often in the hospital for long periods of time and return frequently due to their treatment regimens. Although we are an acute care unit, we are very specialized and care for patients that are higher acuity than most units. About the unitThe Adult Nephrology (AN) unit is made up of inpatient dialysis units at both the Butterworth Campus and the Blodgett Campus of Corewell Health. At Butterworth there are 8 patient bays, and Blodgett has 5 patient bays. The AN team focuses on patient care for those who may have either an acute kidney injury or end state renal disease, that require dialysis support during a hospital stay. Dialysis nurses care for patients at both campuses either in the AN unit or at the bedside depending on the acuity level of the patient. Adult Nephrology is a specialized unit, where staff have gained expertise in dialysis and vascular accesses by becoming certified in nephrology nursing or technician care. Experienced healthcare professionals are required to understand and assess patient conditions and reactions to dialysis. Teamwork is a key function within the AN unit and is a well-known culture for this team. Corewell Health is offering up to $10,000 as a sign on bonus for this opportunity!About this unit3H is a 22 Neuroscience/Spine unit at Blodgett Hospital that specializes in the care of patients admitted with neurological conditions, stroke, and spinal surgeries such as fusions and laminectomies. Employees are often drawn to 3H for the variety of patients while still having a specialty focus. Our employees become competent in caring for a large array of both surgical and medical patients and become experts in the care of patients within our specialties. Specifically, our team is known as being experts in stroke and the care of a wide variety of neurological conditions, managing the care of wounds, drains and post-operative recovery.
