Specialty device training includes the management of long term left ventricular assist devices, right and left sided Impellas, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous renal replacement therapy, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. About the unit6 South specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, pre or post heart or lung transplant, Left Ventricular Assist devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, and respiratory failure necessitating Bipap, or Hi-Flo Nasal Cannula. Individuals are drawn to 6 South as it is a unique environment that allows new grad nurses the opportunity to build a strong foundation in time management and develop their critical thinking skills in non-ICU assignments, while also providing an introduction into ICU level of care. About the unit Our 20 bed High Risk Postpartum / Women’s Health unit is located on 7 Center at Butterworth hospital. We provide couplet care, where we care for both mom and baby together. Two thirds of our patient population is typically related to diabetes management, complications due to high blood pressure, Covid 19, and more. We care for newborns that have issues with feeding, blood sugar management, and high bilirubin levels. About this Unit6 North is a 38 bed Cardiovascular unit that specializes in caring for adult patients with Heart Failure, cardiac dysrhythmias, newly implanted pacemakers and defibrillators, LVAD readmits, pulmonary hypertension and cardiac conditions requiring medical treatment. Most patients receive continuous telemetry monitoring.Care is provided 24 hours per day 7 days a week.Individuals would want to work on this unit do to the large variety of cardiovascular and progressive care experiences that allow for a robust skill set. If they were to transfer to another unit, you would gain time management, proficiency in the management of patient with complex conditions. Some skills you can gain on this unit include, bipap, respiratory management, pulmonary hypertension treatments, management of multiple IV drips, heart failure management, telemetry monitoring. The culture of this unit is teamwork and support. Staff works closely with physicians and other healthcare providers and services to provide optimal care in the inpatient setting. One of the great things about this unit you can't find compared to other units is the strong emphasis on patient education and community resources. About the unit9 Children's is a Pediatric Hematology and Oncology floor with 24 private rooms at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. In addition, this floor cares for Blood and Marrow Transplant as well as surgical overflow patients. Team members are drawn to 9 Childrens for the opportunity to get to know patients and families that are often in the hospital for long periods of time and return frequently due to their treatment regimens. Although we are an acute care unit, we are very specialized and care for patients that are higher acuity than most units. About the unitThe Adult Nephrology (AN) unit is made up of inpatient dialysis units at both the Butterworth Campus and the Blodgett Campus of Corewell Health. At Butterworth there are 8 patient bays, and Blodgett has 5 patient bays. The AN team focuses on patient care for those who may have either an acute kidney injury or end state renal disease, that require dialysis support during a hospital stay. Dialysis nurses care for patients at both campuses either in the AN unit or at the bedside depending on the acuity level of the patient. Adult Nephrology is a specialized unit, where staff have gained expertise in dialysis and vascular accesses by becoming certified in nephrology nursing or technician care. Experienced healthcare professionals are required to understand and assess patient conditions and reactions to dialysis. About the unitThe ACE unit/1D (Acute Care of the Elderly) is a 21 bed Med/Surg unit at Blodgett Hospital. Our focus is on medical patients who are over the age of 65. Nurses are often drawn to 1D because of their passion for our geriatric population while becoming competent in a wide variety of diagnosis. Since we are a Med/Surg unit, we care for patients with a vast array of diagnosis including Congestive Heart Failure, COPD, Septic Shock, Acute Kidney Injuries, Delirium and many more. As a team member on 2 South, you will see a wide variety of patients. Some of those diagnoses include Orthopedic Trauma, Ortho Oncology, Hip & Spine Fractures, Spine Surgery, where the other population is Progressive Care and Med/Surg overflow. About the unit6 Meijer Heart Center (6 Heart) is a 46-bed cardiac and vascular progressive/stepdown unit at the Meijer Heart Center. The primary patient population served include patients with various cardiac and vascular diseases requiring medical, procedural, or surgical interventions. This includes acute coronary syndrome, acute myocardial infarction, post-percutaneous coronary intervention, peripheral artery disease, renal artery disease, aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease and heart rhythm disorders. 6 Heart nurses are skilled in peritoneal dialysis, utilization of Endotool for continuous insulin drip management, and hemodynamic monitoring with arterial lines. 6 Heart is a great unit to grow and develop as a nurse. About the unit5 South is a 30 bed Oncology unit located within Butterworth Hospital. This unit specializes in the care of those with oncology diagnoses and a surgical population of head and neck cancers. Running central lines, administering chemotherapy treatments, and providing oncology education to its patients. Longer stays for patients on this unit are common, giving the team at 5 South the chance to build relationships with the patient and their family. Although this is a specialized unit there is still much to learn due to the variety in patient conditions in addition to their cancer. The Corewell Health Heart OPtimization & Evaluation (HOPE) Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic devoted to the care of patients with advanced heart failure. The multidisciplinary team consists of Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, RNs, Medical Assistants, Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacist, and Medical Social Workers. Additionally, HOPE offers timely referral access to a Dietician, Cardiology-Trained Psychologist and Palliative/Hospice Teams. Many advanced heart failure patients have cardiac implanted devices. HOPE promotes the use of advanced device technologies utilizing artificial intelligence to help predict when a patient may be headed toward fluid overload and decompensation. The HOPE RN Team collaborates with the Device Clinic to aid in device monitoring and management. Despite the advanced care options offered, a subset of HOPE patients will transfer to the Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)/Heart Transplant Clinic if appropriate for those services. Most of the patients will remain with the HOPE Clinic for the remainder of their life. HOPE disciplines work closely together to care for this extremely ill and vulnerable population.To optimize patient outcomes, HOPE offers an enhanced Guideline Directed Medication Titration (GDMT) Service. The GDMT Service improves heart failure outcomes by utilizing a Pharmacist and RN Team combination to rapidly titrate GDMT medications as well as to assess and monitor patients during titration.The role of the RN is critical to the care of these patients. RNs teach patients to self-manage their disease, triage care to reduce hospitalizations & ER visits and promote the best quality of life. The RN’s main responsibilities consist of telephone triage, patient teaching, administering intravenous diuretics and iron infusions, performing blood draws and analysis for Point of Care blood tests. We are proud to share that HOPE RNs are part of a team-based infrastructure that promotes a high level of clinical expertise and critical judgement and encourages autonomy with the opportunity for multidisciplinary collaboration.HOPE is open Monday through Friday, closed weekends and holidays.
