The Health Information Management Services Director is responsible for the overall management of the functions and staff supervision in the HIM department. The position formulates departmental policies and procedures and maintains the indexes and registers required by accrediting and regulatory agencies. In addition, the position ensures that legal aspects of medical records practices, release of information, and hospital responsibility for confidentiality and privacy are being met. The Director establishes and maintains systems to control the collection, maintenance, retrieval, and retention of clinical information and participate on committees and task forces which have medical records or clinical information management objectives.RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS• Performs HIMS duties to stay familiar with procedures, control for quality, and support staff.• Abstracts and compiles medical record data for appropriate optimal reimbursement/charges.• Assures requests for information from external sources are handled expeditiously.• Maintains confidentiality and provides release of patient information per regulations.• Maintains a system for identification and timely completion of incomplete medical records.• Maintains patient charts/records/bills/other materials, keeping information in a secure area.• Abstracts/validates data elements in the medical record and various computer systems.• Uses monthly data from UDS, PATCOM, CMS and other regulatory agencies to measure goal progress.• Organizes, plans, and manages time effectively to complete assignments.• Meets position requirements and performs essential functions.• Completes mandatory training and courses required by completion date.• Reports questionable situations, concerns, complaints, or harassment immediately. QualificationsLicense or Certification:• Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred• Active membership in the American Health Information Management Association preferred.• Minimum Qualifications:• Graduate of accredited Medical Record Technology or Administration Program, or minimum of two years of HIMS supervisory experience in an acute or rehabilitation hospital preferred.• Successful completion of RHIA/RHIT exam or 5 years supervisory experience without credentials.• Strong computer proficiency required.
