The Intensive Care Center (ICC) at Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital is not a specialized unit, meaning that a variety of disease processes are seen, including but not limited to: vascular surgery, orthopedic and non-orthopedic general surgery, NSTEMI, sepsis, shock (hypovolemic, septic, and cardiogenic), stroke (including patients who have received thrombolytic therapy), respiratory compromise or failure, renal failure (including those requiring continuous renal replacement therapy), and heart failure. Patients that are admitted to MedStar St. Mary’s hospital requiring mechanical ventilation and titration of critically ill medications will typically receive nursing care in the ICC. We receive patients from the emergency department, medical floors, and directly from the OR/PACU.
