General Summary of PositionUnit Highlights The MedStar Georgetown Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program (PPHP) is an intensive treatment program for people with an acute psychiatric illness. It supplements, but does not replace, the patient’s own psychiatrist and/or therapist. Treatment is provided in collaboration with these clinicians. The program can be used as a transition for patients being discharged from an inpatient hospitalization or as an intervention for patients who require more intensive care than they can receive in the outpatient setting.Staff consists of an attending psychiatrist, three masters’ prepared registered nurses, a masters’ prepared art therapist/case manager, a master’s prepared psychiatric occupational therapist and an administrative assistant. As MedStar Georgetown is an academic teaching facility, there are also psychiatric residents, neurology residents, medical students, student art therapists and student occupational therapists working in the PPHP. The attending psychiatrist will meet individually with each patient two to three times per week to evaluate medications and the progress being achieved. Each patient will be assigned a primary nurse with whom they can meet to discuss individual issues. Family meetings are scheduled during the program when appropriate. A personalized interdisciplinary treatment plan is provided to help patients gain control over their symptoms and develop more effective coping skills. The staff meets three times a week to develop the treatment plans for each patient, evaluate the efficacy of the treatment, and to make additional recommendations upon completion of the treatment.
