The Certified Anesthesia Tech is Certified through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologist and Technicians (ASATT). They assist staff Anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists in performing the most technical and clinical of anesthesia preparations for procedures in all anesthetizing locations. Serves as a role model by providing a positive influence, initiating, and facilitating change as a source to anesthesia tech team. The certified member of the Anesthesia care team demonstrates problem-solving skills, supports employee engagement initiatives, and maintains trusting, credible, and professional behavior with all members of the Anesthesia care team. Works collaboratively with the Anesthesia Manager and material management team members to ensure proper supply rooms, OR rooms, and carts PAR Levels are maintained, and special orders are communicated to proper personnel. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Certified Anesthesia tech assists the Anesthesiologist/CRNA with intra-operative patient care with real time troubleshooting of all anesthesia equipment. Sets up rapid infusion delivery devices and hemodynamic monitoring equipment for intra-operative use. Perform all duties of the Anesthesia Technician during turnover between cases including but not limited to: disposing of "dirty" items such as suction, circuit, laryngoscope blades and wiping down all anesthesia equipment, ensuring that the anesthesia workspace is ready to be used for another case. Ensure that the anesthesia carts, machines, cabinets, and workroom(s) do not have any expired items and are always stocked with minimum par levels.
Maintain and organize the anesthesia workroom(s) in an orderly manner to ensure items are always functional and readily available. Maintain a physical presence in designated perioperative areas with a readiness to assist anesthesiologists/CRNAs request. Under the direction of the Anesthesia Manager assistant with Joint Commission preparation by maintaining and discarding outdated supplies. Stock anesthesia workroom(s) with special orders outside of daily PAR supplied by local supply chain when supplies go below par levels. Maintain inventory of all supplies in anesthesia workroom and give an accurate weekly report to Manager of items needed to be ordered once par level is reached. Demonstrate knowledge of operating and troubleshooting problems with anesthesia equipment. Promptly alert manager and biomedical engineering regarding broken, malfunctioning, or missing supplies/equipment. Transports blood products and blood samples for laboratory analysis.Check all monitoring equipment daily and assist anesthesiologists/CRNAs with the preparation of such equipment. Be immediately available to assist Anesthesia Techs/ anesthesiologists/CRNAs with difficult airways and other emergent situations. Ensure that all anesthetizing locations have the necessary monitors, medications, equipment, and supplies for the safe administration of a general anesthetic. Work collaboratively as a team member with colleagues and department personnel. Promptly respond to emergency situations in all anesthetizing locations and ensure all appropriate emergency equipment is readily available and functional. Proactively monitor the operating room schedule to ensure prompt turnover and set-up in between cases. Promptly respond to all communications from manager and all members of the anesthesia care team. Champion Point of Care (POC) equipment and training/ reviewing with anesthesia techs, attending meetings, and acting as a liaison under direction of the Anesthesia manager. Clean and maintain all anesthesia equipment according to instructions for use and infection control requirements. Adhere to all department and hospital safety and infection control policies. Demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding proper waste disposal and universal standard precautions. Proactively check all anesthetizing locations between cases to ensure adequate supplies and drugs are always available. Coordinating with respiratory therapy department for collection of empty oxygen tanks and holders weekly. Highly effective verbal communication skills are required to work with management and all members of the anesthesia care team. Perform related duties as requested by manager giving daily report at the end of shifts and keeping up with monthly meetings with manager. • Performs additional duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Skills and Abilities Required: Work requires a high school diploma and seven years of work experience as an anesthesia technician. Knowledge of medical terminology typically acquired through a college level anatomy and physiology course. Experience/knowledge with patient care procedures as related to anesthesia, electrocardiograms, airway support devices, peripheral line access devices, and pressure waveforms; operational knowledge of physiologic monitoring devices and techniques. A. Knowledge of Anesthesia Equipment: Understands the design, setup/calibration, testing, operation, and troubleshooting of equipment associated with the delivery and monitoring of anesthesia. Experienced with various common failure modes of commonly-used anesthesia equipment and threshold for escalating device support (clinical engineering, manufacturer representative, etc). Diagnostic strategies for leaks in ventilatory circuits, monitoring failure, etc. B. Skills: Position requires skillsets which include the following: ANESTHESIA EQUIPMENT: Appropriately connects breathing circuits, gas sampling lines, and filters as needed to anesthesia machines. Demonstrates appropriate setup/calibration/testing/use of anesthesia equipment. Can change CO2 absorbers and assess for any subsequent leaks. ANESTHESIA SUPPLIES: Can appropriately stock, organize, distribute, and utilize anesthesia-related supplies. AIRWAY MANAGEMENT: Assists clinically in both routine and non-routine airway management using current difficult airway algorithms. Can connect and white-balance bronchoscopes. INTRAOPERATIVE MONITORING: Able to set up and calibrate both invasive and noninvasive monitors. Can appropriately connect invasive and noninvasive monitors. Effectively assists with placement of invasive monitoring (such as invasive arterial monitoring). INFECTION CONTROL: Utilizes hospital- and manufacturer-approved techniques for decontamination, disinfection, and/or sterilization. BLOOD PRODUCT ADMINISTRATION: Demonstrates understanding of administrative process for obtaining and verifying blood products for clinical use. Able to use point of care testing (POCT) tests as per department policy. C. Other Anesthesia Support: Assist in transfer of monitors and IV lines. Assists in transport and positioning of patients. ADMINISTRATIVE: Ability to mentor people, dynamically adjust to scheduling changes, and communicate effectively with anesthesia team and departmental leadership. III. Certification Requirements ASATT Certified Anesthesia Technician (Cer.A.T) or Certified Anesthesia Technologist (Cer.A.T.T) certification is required. Must Maintain ASATT Certification.
